Here in Herefordshire at the home of Poshcorn we are spoilt for choice for delicious, fresh, local produce that we can easily get our hands on to make up some yummy dishes. Buying locally means you are supporting the local economy as well as reducing your food miles. We are going to look at seasonal dishes throughout the year to give you all some ideas of what is best and when.
This is pretty much the best time of year for produce! At this time of year there are so many lovely fruits and vegetables to get your hands on in local farmers markets or grocers (or in your own garden if you’ve got green fingers!)
- Soft fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, cherries and plums
- Salad bits such as cucumber, lettuce, spring onions, peppers – (some of which are grown in green houses)
- Vegetables such as courgettes, marrows, beetroot, carrots
- Tree fruits such as apples, pears and damsons
- Hedgerows - Why not scour the local parks or fields for damsons, blackberries or sloe berries?
Here are some of the markets we love where you can get the best seasonal produce:
Borough Market, London
This world famous market is a must for any London visit. As London’s oldest market that is said to date back to the 12th Century. Wonder around browsing the numerous stores, grab a drink or snack, and sit back to watch the bustle unfold imagining you are back in the Victorian times.
Carrot & Wine stores, Herefordshire
We love this ever-expanding chain of stores near to our farm in Herefordshire. Local produce, top quality treats and even a “pour your own wine” cask means you can return for a refill again and again!
Malton Food Market, Yorkshire
Every second Saturday of the Month in and around the Milton rooms this market offers 35 stalls of local treats for hard core foodies, or those that just fancy a stroll land a few delicious snacks. There are cookery classes on offer too.
Altrincham Market, Manchester
30mins outside Manchester this market house has had a new lease of life in recent years following a massive refurb. “Alty Market” to the locals, this place has freshly homemade dishes for sale ranging from wood-fired pizza, to fish and chips and Belgian beers. Dogs are welcome too!
